Carl E. Schlier

Carl E. Schlier is a partner in the firm's Electrical Patent Prosecution and Litigation practice groups. As a former engineer and scientist for IBM Federal Systems Division, he possesses years of practical industry expertise and a deep understanding of the science and technology underlying his clients’ innovations.

Mr. Schlier practices in a wide range of electrical technologies, including non-volatile memories, flat panel displays, computer hardware, software, magnetic media and medical imaging devices. He focuses on semiconductor technology, having extensive experience in flash memories, LCD displays, and three-dimensional bonded semiconductors, and the processes used to build the devices. He also has experience in LED and optical devices, as well as automotive LED headlamp and signaling lamp systems. At IBM Mr. Schlier worked in the field of radiation effects on semiconductor devices and the development of CMOS semiconductor processes for military applications. He published several technical papers on this subject.

Mr. Schlier brings a multi-faceted approach to his client’s needs, drawing on his broad background. He has extensive experience in district court litigation, patent prosecution, counseling of infringement and validity issues, and portfolio development. His district court experience includes numerous cases defending customer defendants in multi-party actions. Mr. Schlier protects his client’s individual interests while effectively working within defense counsel groups to advance the defenses of the group.  For example, Mr. Schlier represented Japan Display in an action involving LCD panels for laptops and cell phones and represented Toshiba in actions involving LCD panels for television and laptops, PC modems, and microprocessors. All cases were resolved favorably for the client.

He has many years of experience prosecuting applications through all phases of the patent process as well as preparing infringement and validity analyses for pre-litigation and licensing activities. Mr. Schlier also develops patent portfolios through strategic claim drafting and prosecution strategies to obtain key patents covering client’s technologies. For one client, Ziptronix, Mr. Schlier developed and prosecuted the entire portfolio later acquired by Tessera for a substantial sum. Moreover, Mr. Schlier obtains strategic claims for patents to be included in a patent pool and meets with the pool administrator to obtain entry of patents in the pool.
