Oblon is committed to recruiting, retaining, and mentoring a diverse workforce and to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion. We support the advancement of our employees from all backgrounds. By drawing on the diverse backgrounds of our employees and fostering an inclusive working environment for our employees, we are able to offer more meaningful and creative legal solutions to our many international clients.
Oblon is proud of the diverse nature of its workforce, built over time to be inclusive and celebratory of all communities. Our firm is committed to a diverse and inclusive work environment in which every employee has the opportunity to excel professionally and to feel comfortable and valued while doing so. To help our employees do so, we also offer generous paid parental leave, flexible work hours, reduced-hours work schedules, and remote-work arrangements.
Oblon also supports our professionals’ engagement in organizations that promote diversity within the local legal and business communities. The firm participates in and sponsors several organizations, including those that address the underrepresentation of women and minorities in the legal and engineering professions.
I joined Oblon not knowing what to expect. It was my first law firm experience, having changed careers from engineering to law, and, at the time, I was to be only the second Hispanic attorney at the firm. What I found was a vibrant diverse culture full of people from all walks of life and ethnicities. From day one the partners and other associates included me in social activities and acted as if I had been at the firm for years. Professionally, I was immediately included in many different client projects and found myself with ample opportunity to show my legal abilities, and though the work was often high-pressure, the working environment always remained relaxed. I quickly felt I belonged at Oblon – a feeling that remains with me more than 14 years later.
Today, as a partner, I work to create the same welcoming, inclusive environment for new associates and staff members regardless of their background because I believe its diverse, inclusive culture is one of Oblon’s strengths. That’s why I often tell new hires that “I came to Oblon for the job, but I stayed for the culture.”
Oblon values diversity and strives to be inclusive of everyone. I have experienced this firsthand as an associate in Oblon’s litigation group. Even as a newer associate, I feel respected and valued by my colleagues at Oblon. I have been included in many diverse projects and other opportunities. Oblon has curated a firm culture that actively promotes equality and respect and as a result, has created an enjoyable and collaborative work environment. I am grateful for the friendships I have built here at Oblon, and I am grateful to be part of a team that truly values and respects one another.
I started at Oblon as a patent agent, attended law school part-time with the firm’s support and encouragement, and have been recently welcomed into the partnership. I have had wonderful mentors, both male and female, that actively provided me with opportunities in rewarding and diverse projects. I was provided many avenues to hone my legal skills and client relationship management to further my career development. I have been and continue to be fortunate for the exceptional collegiality amongst my peers as well as senior members of the firm.
We have many team building social activities and client development outings such as golf trips, ski trips, and fantasy football, each of which promotes inclusion at all levels. I am welcomed to attend these activities and outings, and help to organize them. I can attest, based on my first hand experiences, that Oblon understands that diversity will help lead to our firm’s further successes.
“When you reach the top, you should remember to send the elevator back down for the others.” – Edith Piaf. Oblon continuously instills a culture of teamwork and mentorship, which has led to my fulfillment and success in my career and that I, as a new partner, am committed to build and grow in creating opportunities and positive experiences for other women and minority professionals at our firm.
